What Is Aluminium Channel?

Aluminium channel is a distinctive type of aluminium extrusion widely used for structural applications. It is characterized by its “C” shape in cross-section, featuring two flanges that extend from one side of a web.

 

How Are Aluminium Channels Made?

Aluminium channels are manufactured through the extrusion process, where round aluminium stock is pressed through a channel-shaped die using a high-pressure ram. There are two primary extrusion methods:

  • Direct Extrusion: The die is fixed in place while the ram pushes the billet through the hollow die.
  • Indirect Extrusion: The billet remains static, and the die, housed within a hollow ram, is pushed along the length of the billet.

These methods can be further categorized into:

  • Hot Extrusion: The aluminium stock is heated to a fully plasticized state and extruded in a vacuum to prevent oxidation.
  • Cold Extrusion: The billets are shaped at or near room temperature.
  • Warm Extrusion: The stock is heated to a temperature between 800º and 1800º F, depending on the alloy composition.

 

After extrusion, the aluminium channels are straightened on a stretcher, making them ready for shipment and use.
